The Lennard-Jones Centre brings together researchers from different departments across the University of Cambridge with a common interest in materials and molecular modelling. Its core aim is to foster an inclusive environment from which new ideas and collaborations can emerge. The terms “materials and molecular modelling” are taken to be loosely defined, but include quantum mechanical systems, exploration of high-dimensional landscapes, and the interfaces between materials. The Centre takes its name from a pioneer of computational modelling, Sir John Lennard-Jones, who was instrumental in building one of the first mechanical and soon after electronic computers at Cambridge University. The scholarship’s name is in honour of Emeritus Professor Ruth Lynden-Bell, alumna of Murray Edwards College of the University of Cambridge, and her outstanding contributions to the field of atomistic simulations to investigate the properties of liquids.
The MPhil in Scientific Computing at the Department of Physics, University of Cambridge is pleased to offer a scholarship for students wishing to study in the MPhil in Scientific Computing for the 2024-25 academic year. The scholarship will cover the MPhil fees (£13,554 in 2024-25) for Home students or will contribute the equivalent amount towards Overseas fees.
The successful candidate will receive training on the theory and application of atomistic simulations. They will employ this knowledge to conduct research in the field of materials and molecular modelling.
This scholarship is part of an effort to build a stronger and more inclusive Scientific Computing community, and to bring a wider range of experiences to this field. As such, applications of female candidates, who are currently under-represented in this field, are particularly welcome.
Application: Candidates who have already applied for the MPhil in Scientific Computing before the funding deadline of 4th January, and indicated they wished to be considered for funding, will be automatically considered for this award.
Candidates who haven’t yet applied, should mention their wish to be considered for the Lennard-Jones Centre Lynden-Bell Scholarship in their application to the MPhil in Scientific Computing, under the section ‘Statement of interest’, by the funding deadline stated below.
Funding deadline: Sunday 17 March 2024.
